Imagine you are in a time when the night seemed darker and deeper, when it seemed to be a
creeping living thing.

There was not the white cold brilliant wash of electric light that devoured every patch of
shadow.

Before the light bulb, people took comfort in the raw burning flame.
The flame offered protection for the sinister things that the dark held.
With the iridescent light the younger generation forgot to fear the dark.

They forgot about the floating wraiths, the spirits whispering.

So, the ghost stories died on the dead lips of our grandfathers and grandmothers.
People forgot about the promise of warmth, comfort, and security that came from the flame of
the Edo period.

This is why I refuse to wash these museum rooms with false cold iridescent light.
Instead, I burn the true light, the flame, the candle.
